About

Hello, I am Jacob. I am native German and throughout the course of my life I have spent years in other countries such as Portugal, Costa Rica, the UK and Spain. In this context, other cultures and languages have always been important in my life. Although I am interested in the acquisition of languages, my work is more concerned with the domains of Psychology, Linguistics and Computer Science.

Human-Computer Interaction: Self-Aware AI and Superhumans

I am specifically interested in how computers generate and understand language and how humans can gain instant access to the results of language processing. AI is developing fast and will at some point develop something we may call self-consciousness. Also, we should not forget that humans may either directly or indirectly access complex processing results that no human could accomplish when reading and understanding an entire document. By giving humans access to pre-processed information, we are expanding the architecture of information processing. In the field of AI, we are too often confronted with the critical question at what point a machine gains human-level consciousness. This notion is confounded by an idea that human level consciousness is complete, homogenous and has reached its ultimate stage of development.

Can machines comprehend language more effectively and make the processing results available to the end user, rendering his awareness of information in such a way that we could describe it as an expansion of a processing architecture that gives rise to new levels of understanding the world around us?

What exactly is consciousness, specifically self-consciousness and self-conscious AI, and how do these questions help to overcome the limits of our own understanding?

NLP AND HOW TEXT PROCESSING CAN EXPAND THE HUMAN MIND: If we think about the number of words we use to describe content, we realize that comprehension is always dependent on the amount of text and time needed to process the information correctly. Human to human communication is complex due to the number of non-controllable variables involved and if we think about communication in a more abstract form, language may be understood as a series of sent and received packages of information, very much like an information processing system sends and receives information. Processing of text information can take many forms, from simple structural units to more complex structures and semantic components. As machines are already extended parts of the human body, the machine becomes an organ of Human-AI architecture.

We use text, audio and video to communicate information from one person to another. Machine-processed data may be forwarded to display contents to the user, who can receive information based on the level of selected analysis. Structural text analysis is simply a first and base level approach of processing input. The analysis types trigger functions that process the input - the first step on a semantic level could be to assess what content is being forwarded. Here we need to keep in mind that the objective is to provide the user with a hierarchical output forming more of a rough outer layer of information and more fine-grained analysis in the interior.

The processing is supposed to save time of making sense of the input and to resolve ambiguities quickly. Let's think of one possible scenario. A help-desk receives a lot of e-mails from customers that cannot be resolved automatically. We still need human intervention, but only at the level of post-processed input. Here is a list of possible steps of data analysis that could help to increase efficiency of working through the e-mails:

~ Identify main theme - this could be done by analysing the subject line and matching it with the identified theme by conducting a search through the main text identifying associated themes with the subject line. The aim is not to reach a level of automated response displayed to the customer, all we want is a reduction of the amount of content and a more efficient representation of the content. ~
